Innovation:
For domestic use, submersible pumps of 4 inch / 100mm diameter were in use, and bores of 4 inch / 100mm were drilled. But in India, people have used hand pumps in bores from a long time and the bores were of less than 100mm and hence a new requirement has been felt. It has created scope for development of smaller diameter submersible pump, so as to facilitate use of bores of less than 100mm diameter; 3 inch / 75mm diameter submersible pumps were developed for the first time in India. This development is an innovative idea in the pumps industry in India.
As existing submersible pumps could not be fitted, it was felt that development of new small diameter pump set is the requirement of the day and will help hundreds of thousands of persons in replacing the hand pump set with the electrical submersible pump set.
Development of a new product for a very large company is not a big issue. But for a small unit its a very big thing. Still KIWI PUMPS had taken this big step and an innovative idea not tried by anyone in India started getting shape. There was a big risk as there was no data on the possible success rate & acceptance of such a product developed by a very small unit not having and brand image at that point of time.
Only 3 to 4 Italian manufacturers of submersible pumps were and are manufacturing 3 inch / 75mm submersible pumps. KIWI PUMPS, RAJKOT is the first company to manufacture 3 inch / 75mm submersible pumps in India.
All the foreign manufacturers are using resin or oil filled motors and the cost of pumps is higher. KIWI PUMPS has developed WATER FILLED motor which costs less. This design helps in easy rewinding of motors in case of repairs & can be repaired at the field level. Flow rate & head in KIWI PUMPS design is equivalent or better for the same H.P. & stages compared to Italian designs.

Implementation of Innovation
KIWI PUMPS, on S.S.I. unit was involved in this innovative product. At the time of introduction of the product, the possible success rate, possible difficulties that may arise in convincing the CUSTOMER etc. were unknown. Development of such a small diameter submersible pump set was a risky proposition as it involved time, money & efforts. The only positive approach was to actualize the innovative idea and we have to be creative and should be ready to take risk.
The acceptance of the new product by the customer was not very difficult as the responsibility for good performance was taken by the company. With time the word spread from one customer to others from villages to town and then to whole world.
The new developed pump sets were installed at selected bores to demonstrate the usefulness of the product to the customer. The initial 50 customers formed the network that could be shown to the public, the success of the product and usefulness of the product to the customer. The achievement has given the confidence to each & every person working in the company for the introduction of the product throughout India.
Impact outside organization:
Small sized electrical submersible pump sets of 3 inch / 75mm became an instant success and the people have adopted the new innovative product without any doubts. Necessity of drilling a new bore of larger diameter was eliminated. Each existing bore costing Rs. 4000/- has been utilized without abandoning. As on date i.e. within the last 8 years, not only KIWI PUMPS but another 400 manufacturers are manufacturing such pump sets and the number of such manufactured pumps will come to 2500 pump sets by each manufacturers per year x 400 manufacturers x 8 years = 80,00,000 pump sets.
The saving to the nation:
1. Avoidance of drilling new bores.
2. Utilization of already existing bores.
In addition, as and when any customer wants to change the 4 inch / 100mm submersible pump set, in case of limited water requirement for domestic purpose, 3 inch / 75mm pump sets are used, thus reducing the investment on the pump set, as smaller diameter pump sets cost much less. Thus the manufacturing of 3 inch submersible pump sets has taken a strong root in India.
